Hook: Wet Fly #10-#20
Thread: Brown 6/0
Body:Hares Ear Dubbing or Substitute
Ribbing:Copper Wire
Tail:Gopher Tail
Wingcase:Turkey Feather
Head:Hares Ear Dubbing or Substitute

Tying Instructions:
The first thing you want to do is get out a turkey feather. Apply some head cement to the portion of the turkey feather your going to use for this fly. This strengthens the feather so the fly will last longer. If your tying the beadhead version, you want to slide it in first. Now attach the the thread to the hook and tie in your materials for the tail, remembering to keep is sparse. Attach the copper wire in the same place you attached the tail and dub the body forward about 2/3 of the way up the hook shank. Make sure the body is tapered so it gets slightly larger as you go forward. Now Wrap the wire up to this point and clip it off. Now clip off a small piece of turkey feather for the wingcase. Tie it down so it is laying over the top of the body for now. Now dub the head, you want this slightly larger than the body. Finish dubbing the head and then pull the turkey feather over the top of the head and tie it down at the eye of the hook. Now tie off your thread for the finished fly.

Fly Information:
This is one of the most versatile nymphs out there. It is a very good nymph for finding the fish. If I was only allowed one nymph the rest of my life, this could easily be the one I pick. I've caught all different types of fish at all times of the year with this fly and its a relatively simple one to tie. It can be tied as large as size 10 but most of my imitations are a 14 or 16. I have a fishing buddy that just gives me a glazed over look anytime I break out the 18's but they do work like a charm at the right times. However I tie my Hare's Ear nymphs a little smaller than most people. I don't mean a smaller hook size, I am referring to the diameter of the actual fly. Most commercially tied and even some fly shops tie these flies to big around. They may look "nice" that way but the fish seem to like the smaller or sparser fly. The tail may also be tied with many different materials. I cut of some gopher tails from my gopher hunting during the spring and use those. Just make sure to keep the tail sparse. Most commercially tied nymphs have WAY to much tail. I also don't bother buying actual Hares Ear dubbing. There are many substitutes, I've found a great one to be my dogs underfur that she sheds constantly around the house. Its the perfect color and it even gives the fly a little bouyancy. Which bring me to my next tip for this fly, it is used very well as an emerger also. It can be fished near the top for fish coming up for emergers very effectively.
